Imagine yourself enjoying your morning coffee in front of your tent or chalet, surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Ariège Pyrenees. Suddenly, a huge shadow glides majestically over the valley… You may have just spotted the Bearded Vulture, one of the most fascinating and rare birds of prey in Europe.
At the campsite
What is the Bearded Vulture?

Often nicknamed the "bone-breaker," the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) is the largest bird of prey in Europe. With a wingspan that can reach nearly 2.80 meters, its soaring flight is a truly spectacular sight.
How to recognize it?
Unlike other vultures, the Bearded Vulture has a slender silhouette reminiscent of a giant falcon. Here are some distinctive features to help you spot it in the skies of Ariège:
-
Its wings: Long, narrow and pointed.
-
Its tail: Diamond-shaped (very characteristic in flight).
-
Its colours: A striking contrast between a slate grey back and a chest with tones ranging from white to orange-red (due to the ferruginous mud baths it likes).
-
Its "beard": Small black feathers under its beak that give it its name.
An essential eco-friendly cleaner
The Bearded Vulture plays a crucial role in our mountain ecosystem. It is the only vertebrate in the world whose diet consists of 80% bones. By cleaning up carcasses left by other predators and scavengers, it prevents the spread of disease. Rest assured, it is a shy bird and completely harmless to humans (and your pets!).
Ariège Évasion : A prime spot for birdwatching

Our 5 tips for observing the Bearded Vulture during your stay
To maximize your chances of catching a glimpse (from a distance!) of this mythical bird of prey, here are our expert recommendations:
- Look up in the mid-morning: Bearded Vultures use thermal updrafts to gain altitude effortlessly. They are often most active between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun warms the rock faces.
- Get equipped: Don't forget your binoculars! A pair of 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars is ideal for birdwatching. If you're a photographer, a good telephoto lens is essential.
- Explore the surrounding trails: From the campsite, hike towards the high plateaus. The higher you climb, the better your chances of encountering their territory. Discover our hiking suggestions in Ariège.
The Plateau de Beille : In winter as in summer, the bearded vulture regularly soars over the vast open spaces of the plateau in search of food.
The Orlu Valley: Its steep cliffs offer ideal nesting areas, jealously guarded by the reserve's rangers. - The profile in flight: Unlike the griffon vulture, which has a short, square tail, the bearded vulture is recognizable by its diamond-shaped (or wedge-shaped) tail and its long, narrow wings. It looks like a giant falcon!
- Be patient: Wildlife observation requires calm. Settle comfortably into your spot, enjoy the scenery, and remain attentive to movement in the sky.
The bearded vulture is the subject of a national action plan for its conservation. If, during a hike or mountain bike ride, you observe a bird perched on a cliff or a nest, keep your distance (at least 500m) and do not share the precise location on social media. Admiring this magnificent bird in full flight is still the most spectacular sight!
Did you know? The reintroduction and protection of the Bearded Vulture in the Pyrenees is a true ecological success story. To learn more about conservation efforts, feel free to visit the website of the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds)
