His story:
Considered the oldest in the Ariège department, the chapel dates from the 10th century, perhaps even the 10th century
9th century with older components.
The chapel was known for its black stone, a mysterious meteorite or a very strange rock.
The miraculous stone is still kept in a shelter near the chapel. This stone is believed
to cure epilepsy. This required sleeping through the night, using the stone as a pillow.
Thanks to legends of miraculous healings, the place was long a site of pilgrimage, which
undoubtedly contributed to its preservation to this day.
The chapel has been listed as a historical monument since 1965.
Pilgrimages to the chapel have died out over time…
In 2016, the chapel was closed as an emergency measure. The bell tower was in danger of collapsing . The roof of a
Renovations in the last century had made the building so heavy that the stones were beginning to explode
under the weight…
The residents of Arnave have created a preservation association. The town hall has
mobilized to save this architectural masterpiece and this important place of worship and pilgrimage. The message
The " Save the Chapel of Saint-Paul d'Arnave " appeal was heard and numerous donations were collected.
with the support of the heritage foundation.
The work was completed in 2021 ; the chapel is once again open to visitors .
The feast of Saint Paul is celebrated there on October 1st and a pilgrimage therefore takes place on the first Sunday of October.



How do I get there?
By car:
From the Ariège Evasion campsite, take the D123 towards Tarascon-sur -Ariège. You Ariège river
Upon arriving in town, there is a beautiful view of the ramparts overlooking the cliffs.
After the confluence with the Vicdessos , take the bridge to the right towards Foix along the right bank.

Go through the village of Bompas, then turn right onto the D20 coastal road. Park in one of the car parks.

Cross the bridge and immediately turn right onto a street that becomes a track. There is a signpost.

to catch a glimpse of the chapel.
The path starts out flat and runs alongside the village pastures. A good 20-minute walk is needed to..
access to the Romanesque chapel.
On foot:
Walking to the St Paul d'Arnave chapel is a very nice hike starting from the Ariège Evasion campsite via the Ussat pass.
