Origins and etymology
Canoeing and kayaking, although often confused, are two distinct boats with its own origins and characteristics.
The canoe, originating in North America, takes its name from the Iroquois word "kanawa". Invented by Native Americans, it was made from birch, cedar or pine bark, and was used for transportation, hunting and fishing.
The kayak, meanwhile, has its roots in the Inuit peoples of Greenland and Alaska. The word "kayak" means "boatman" in the Inuktitut language. Constructed from sealskins stretched over a wooden frame, it was designed for hunting at sea in harsh conditions.
From the utility to sport
From the 16th century, Europeans discovered these boats and adopted them for exploration and trade. In the 19th century, canoeing and kayaking gaining popularity as leisure and competition sports. Clubs and associations are created, and the first races are organized.

Technique and diversity
The canoe is distinguished from kayak by its open position and the use of a simple paddle. Kayak, on the other hand, is closed and is handled with a double paddle. This fundamental difference implies distinct paddle and balance techniques.
Today, canoeing is available in a multitude of disciplines:
- In vive waters : slalom, descent, online race
