Are you looking for a magical natural setting for your next getaway in the Pyrenees ? Look no further. Lake Bethmale, located in the heart of theAriège region, is a must-see destination that leaves no one indifferent.

Whether you're a photography enthusiast, a casual walker, or simply seeking a breath of fresh air, this place offers a timeless escape. Let me guide you through this exceptional natural site, where every reflection on the water seems to tell a story.

A Forest Setting and Emerald-Colored Water

From the first steps on the banks, the spectacle is breathtaking. What immediately strikes you is this incredible turquoise hue, almost unreal, which gives the site its well-deserved nickname of emerald lake.

Nestled at an altitude of 1,074 meters in the Couserans region, this body of water is jealously guarded by a dense beech forest. This striking contrast between the deep green of the trees and the luminous sparkle of the water creates a soothing and mysterious atmosphere.

It's a true paradise for photographers who revel in capturing the perfect reflections of the surrounding mountains. Each season transforms the landscape, offering an ever-renewed palette of colors to those who take the time to observe it.

The Mysterious Legend of Bethmale Lake

The place is so captivating not only for its aesthetic beauty. The famous legend of Lake Bethmale adds a mystical dimension to the visit.

Legend has it that long ago, an evil witch terrorized the inhabitants of the Bethmale Valley. Fed up, the villagers decided to hunt her down relentlessly. Cornered and on the verge of being captured, the witch reportedly chose to throw herself into the icy waters of the lake rather than surrender.

According to the elders, her vibrant blue-green dress then stained the water, giving her that unique emerald color for eternity. A fascinating story to tell younger children and add a touch of magic to your exploration!
